HUMBOLDT ARTS COUNCIL 636 F St. Sponsored by Redwood Capital Bank. Performance Rotunda Musical Guest, No Vacancy, This dynamic four-piece band brings the spirit of ’90s alternative rock and garage-band energy to every performance. William Thonson “Embracing the Quiet,” Leslie Kenneth Price. As an artist deeply inspired by Buddhism and nature, Leslie’s work explores the interplay between the forces through color, and transparent layering techniques in abstract painting. His practice involves using thin layers of acrylic glazes and washes that vary in translucency to create pieces that evoke depth, luminosity, and the contemplated experience for the viewer. Through this body of work, he aims to create a meditative and transformative environment and encourages reflection on interconnectedness. Drawing from the natural world, and the principles of impermanence serve as an invitation to engage in quiet observation and introspection. Youth, Floyd Bettiga, Rotunda & Knight Gallery “Humboldt County Youth Arts Festival,” The Humboldt County Youth Arts Festival (YAF) is an annual celebration of student creativity, presented in partnership with the Humboldt County Office of Education and the Humboldt Arts Council. Held in the month of March during Art Education Month, the festival showcases the work of students from across the county at the Morris Graves Museum of Art. The event features live performances and an artist reception on the first Saturday in March. This professional gallery setting offers many young artists their first opportunity to publicly display their work, fostering pride and inspiration. YAF also highlights the dedication of teachers and the strength of Humboldt County’s art programs, while bringing the community together to celebrate youth creativity. By sharing their art in a public space, students gain confidence and connect with the wider community, reflecting the county’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists. Anderson Galleries “collective grief – in memorium,” Lori Goodman and Teddy Milder. In 2023, we traveled to Germany and Poland, returning just when the Israeli kidnappings and subsequent horrific Gaza war began. We reflected on the mass killings of the holocaust, genocide, war and devastation in Gaza; and atrocities that are now occurring and have been throughout history, including the current threats on democracy. These events simultaneously inspired us to make work to mark collective grief. We were awarded an artist residency in January 2023 in Urubumba, Peru to begin exploring construction of small paper sculptures that reflect devastation and atrocities, historical and contemporary — a means of witnessing loss and channeling sorrow into material form. We worked for over a year to complete more than 100 sculptures, with similar shapes and forms, but no two alike. Together, they formed a stark landscape echoing our grief as the Gaza war deepened and democratic institutions felt increasingly precarious.  Realizing we needed to include a gesture towards healing and hope, we made more sculptures, this time pigmented with a glowing saffron color.  At its first showing in June 2025 at the Barn gallery in Eureka, we witnessed viewers move slowly around the work—some brought to tears, others lingering to discover each sculpture’s unique presence. The installation sparked heartfelt dialogue and reflection. Many told us: it must have been powerful to do something with your hands, in the face of so much grief. And indeed, the act of making became a way to process despair, transforming it into shared space and conversation. We hope our installation reflects finding beauty in the struggle to nurture hope, while remembering and honoring the devastation, loss of life, and culture due to senseless violence, atrocity and war. We hold all who suffered and died in memoriam. Rotunda Gallery “From Humboldt to Humboldt,” Guest Curator m.p. Warming. Inspired by the living Giants, hollowed out by fire and growing strong, I bring remnants of an exhibition that first set sail on the AVONTUUR cargo schooner—en route from Germany to Colombia in 2025. Because of my failings, the ship could not dock in Colombia as planned. This is how Alexander von Humboldt’s ammonites arrive in Humboldt County, a joyous pivot from a failed attempt. And in this magnificent place, I collect my thoughts and strength to continue our journey for nature kind. Since this project’s inception, the exhibition aimed to create a bridge between Western and Indigenous knowledge for biodiversity recovery. The bridge is shown here with films from my fellow environmental artists, whose art originally voyaged aboard. The exhibit, in its entirety, sailed on the schooner (shipped with zero carbon) from Germany to the Caribbean and back again. The art is currently stored in our Captain’s warehouse, awaiting the next chance. We artists—like von Humboldt himself and like many who dwell in Humboldt County—are always en route—or waiting for the next great adventure. I have not given up on our exhibit for Santa Marta. And as the Redwoods attest, time will tell. Permanent Collection Gallery “From the HAC Collection-Morris Graves,” In a baby book, Graves’ mother recorded his first word as “see.” In looking at a life of work, it seems that this is what he has asked himself and us as viewers to do all along- to see, to look beyond the surface of the objects and catch sight of their inner nature. This exhibition invites the viewer to explore the work of Morris Graves from the HAC Permanent Collection and to see glimpses into a world of natural harmony and ethereal beauty. The HAC Permanent Collection Gallery will rotate works from the collection that are only exhibited occasionally.
